  The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Alabama are often tougher than in other states, so better not forget that rivers here are less forgiving. The scenic beauty of Blount / Jefferson County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water make the trip here worthwhile. The starting point is not too far from Birmingham-Hoover, as you can see on the road map further down. This is the only paddling section along Gurley Creek. This section of Gurley Creek in Blount / Jefferson County is 3.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class
    II-III section. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling rivers. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Getting your paddling muscles
activated and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. This is a pretty short section so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over.

Briefly about the general area:
Summertime brings highs in the 80's to Gurley Creek. For the duration of the moonlight hours it's mostly in the 60's. Highs through the winter are ordinarily in the 40's, and overnight lows in the 20's for Gurley Creek. Gurley Creek sees pretty high levels of rain; the month with most of the rain is March while October is generally the driest month.
A tremendous place in the vicinity of Gurley Creek is Gurley Creek Gap.
