Talladega
county,
Salt Creek Road to Henderson Lake Road section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS III-IV(V) 3 miles
Paddling Salt Creek crosses private land and in Alabama if you can't navigate it in a craft of somekind you are tresspassing as soon as you step out of the craft. The last 2 miles before Henderson Lake road is all private land. It is so low and narrow with dead falls everywhere there is no way to navigate it in any kind of craft. Says John Ponder
The Salt Creek Road to Henderson Lake Road section of Salt Creek is 3 miles long and has been rated as a class III-IV(V) section by American Whitewater. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting
and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are not as easy as elsewhere. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more. The nearby hotels are
a bit away from the river, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The beautiful scenery of Talladega County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The put-in is not too far from Anniston-Oxford, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. There are no other stretches to paddle along Salt Creek than the Salt Creek Road to Henderson Lake Road stretch. The campgrounds here at Salt Creek are pretty good. No matter if you're whitewater
rafting or kayaking in this general area you won't find many other paddling spots. This is a short paddling stretch so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times.
