Talladega
county,
Salt Creek Road to Henderson Lake Road section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS III-IV(V) 3 miles
Paddling Salt Creek crosses private land and in Alabama if you can't navigate it in a craft of somekind you are tresspassing as soon as you step out of the craft. The last 2 miles before Henderson Lake road is all private land. It is so low and narrow with dead falls everywhere there is no way to navigate it in any kind of craft. Says John Ponder
The nature scenery of Talladega County and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The Salt Creek Road to Henderson Lake Road stretch of Salt Creek is 3 miles
long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III-IV(V) section. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. A bit of exercise and spending some quality
time in nature will have you coming back for more. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Alabama are harder than the national norm, so don't forget that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. This section is quite short so it's not like you're gonna spend hours on the river in one stretch. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you won't find a large number of other rivers. Salt Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Salt Creek
Road to Henderson Lake Road stretch is the only one. The starting point is not too far from Anniston-Oxford, as you can see on the road map further down.
