If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so keep in mind that many runs in this state are not easy. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Scottsboro, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. This stretch of South Sauty Creek is 1.2 miles long and is a class IV-V section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your
car. The beautiful scenery of Alabama and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. And of course,
there are campgrounds nearby. This is an extremely short section so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. This is the only paddling section along South Sauty Creek.
Briefly about the general area: South Sauty Creek sees pretty high levels of rainfall; the wettest month of the year is regularly March, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest of the months is October. Summer brings highs in the 90's to South Sauty Creek, and throughout the night it cools down to the 60's. The winter brings highs down to
the 40's; nighttime lows at South Sauty Creek throughout the winter regularly fall into the 20's. Bucks Pocket is a good site to visit next to South Sauty Creek. Don't leave South Sauty Creek without first paying a visit to Yeager Spring, and you have to have a look at Godwin Point when you're here.
