Jackson
county,
Walls of Jericho Gorge section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS IV-V+ 2 miles
The wonderful Alabama scenery and the cool fresh water will make you feel great. The starting location is a reasonable drive from Scottsboro, as you can see on the road map further down. The Walls of Jericho Gorge stretch of Turkey Creek is 2 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV-V+ section. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other states, so don't forget that the rivers in this state are less manageable. You might have to settle for a hotel
a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The campgrounds here at Turkey Creek are pretty good. This is a pretty short section so no need to bring snacks. Since you're on this site you are
probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of spots for that. Turkey Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Walls of Jericho Gorge stretch is the only one. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near.
Briefly about the general area: For the period of the warm months at Turkey Creek highs are usually in the 80's while nighttime lows are generally in the 60's. Through the wintertime this place gets highs in the 40's, and after the
sun is down during the winter temperatures at Turkey Creek plunge into the 20's. A delightful spot near Turkey Creek is Poplar Hollow, and if you want to stop at some out of the ordinary stuff, stop at Walls of Jericho. Turkey Creek frequently gets lots of rainfall; March is
the month that gets the most rain; August meanwhile is the driest month. This river is so perfect. Polly Anne Spring is a lovely place to check out while you're at Turkey Creek, and some exciting geology is available here, Walls Jericho is right here.
