CLASS IV-V+ 1 miles
If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Alabama you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. The First Falls to Lake stretch of Yellow Creek is 1 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV-V+ section. This is a very short section so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination.
No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. The put-in is not too far from Gadsden, as you can see on the road map further down. The scenic beauty of Alabama and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile.
The campgrounds here at Yellow Creek are pretty good. The First Falls to Lake stretch is the only paddling stretch along Yellow Creek.
Briefly about the general area: Yellow Creek is a pretty wet place mostly with a great deal of rainfall; of all the months in a year March is the one with the most rain while October is ordinarily the driest month. Summertime highs at Yellow Creek regularly tend to be in the 80's with nighttime lows in the 60's. Highs during the winter are regularly in the 40's while Yellow Creek overnight low temperatures during the winter are in the 20's. Not far from Yellow Creek you discover Anderson Cove.
