The put-in is not too far from Anchorage, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The beautiful scenery of unknown Borough and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. The beauty of the Chugach Mountains is a great plus for this river. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that. For all you camping
people there are campgrounds nearby. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Alaska are harder than the national norm, so keep in mind that many runs in this state are not easy. This is a pretty short section so you'll have to walk back to the start over and over. The 5 miles
upstream to Turnagain Arm stretch of Bird Creek is 3.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class V+ section. Bird Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the 5 miles upstream to Turnagain Arm section is the only one. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while will have you coming back for more.
