Alaska whitewater - Cheshnina River, Wrangell Mountains, Valdez-Cordova Census Area Borough

Valdez-Cordova Census Area county, Lower Tonsina to Copper River Bridge section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS III+     23 miles
The wonderful Alaska scenery and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This stretch of Cheshnina River in Valdez-Cordova Census Area Borough is 23 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III+ section. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance
because these hotels fill up quick. You can enjoy this stretch more if you take your time, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. The beautiful Wrangell Mountains scenery is an added bonus. Cheshnina River doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Lower Tonsina to Copper River
Bridge stretch is the only one. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a pretty small number of paddling spots. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come.
