The 30 Mile Airstrip to Matanuska stretch of Chickaloon River in Alaska is 33 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III+(IV) section. The natural beauty of Alaska and the water flowing gracefully down Chickaloon River are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are not so many other good spots for that around here. There are no other stretches to paddle along Chickaloon River
than the 30 Mile Airstrip to Matanuska stretch. A stretch this long is of course too much for a one day trip, perfect for a real wilderness adventure. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. The river winds through the Talkeetna Mountains and you get great scenery. There aren’t
any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Alaska is often tougher than elsewhere, so better not forget that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners.
Briefly about the general area: Chickaloon River is right by the Chickaloon River Trail. Chickaloon River gets very little rainfall; July is the month that gets the most rain, and the driest month is April. Through the summertime
at Chickaloon River highs are usually in the 60's. Summer nighttime lows plunge down to the 40's. High temperatures during the winter are normally in the 10's; winter nights come with lows in the-10's to Chickaloon River.
