If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. This section of Carlson Creek in CBJ Borough is 2 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III(IV) section by American Whitewater. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Since you're on this site you are probably
into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with not too many other spots for that. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. This is a pretty short section so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak
back to put-in a few times. The beautiful scenery of CBJ Borough and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. There's camping available near Carlson Creek. When you're paddling down a Chugach Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. This river system has a few good paddling sections and the Lower Canyon to Tidewater section is one of them. The put-in location is a short drive from Juneau, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost.
Briefly about the general area:
Carlson Creek commonly gets a great deal of precipitation; during October this area sees the most rain while April is usually the driest month. Summertime at Carlson Creek comes with high temperatures in the 60's. When the night sets in temperatures dip down into the 40's. The cold days of the winter come with highs in the 20's, and winter nights come with lows in the 10's to Carlson Creek.
