The Lower or Upper Copper Lake to Lower Pike Lake or Intricate Bay section of Copper River is 18 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III-IV section of whitewater. The beautiful scenery of Lake and Peninsula Borough and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. If you're a camper
you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so pack your camp stove. The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other states, so better not forget
that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. The river winds through the Aleutian Range and you get great scenery. This is the only paddling stretch along Copper River.
Briefly about the general area: At Copper River all through the months of summer highs are in the 60's. During the moonlight hours it's usually in the 40's. For the period of the winter highs are ordinarily in the 20's with temperatures at Copper River dipping down into the 0's through winter nights. Copper River gets a normal amount of yearly precipitation; of all the months in a year September is the one with the most rain, and June is the month with the least moisture.
