  The McCarthy Road section of Gilahina River in Alaska is 7.5 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III section of whitewater. The scenic beauty of Alaska and the water flowing gracefully down Gilahina River attract people from near and far. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking
    or both, doesn't matter, there are lots of good places for that around here. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the McCarthy Road stretch is one of them. This is a pretty decent length section,
you can easily run it on an afternoon. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Alaska are harder than the national norm, so you'd better keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. Whitewater paddling here in the Wrangell Mountains is a great experience. There arenít any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you donít have reservations you might end up sleeping  
in your car.

Around Gilahina River you donít get a lot of rainfall. Of all the months in a year July is the one with the most rain; April on the other hand is the driest. At Gilahina River all through the summer months highs are in the 60's. When the night sets in temperatures plunge down into the 40's. Through the wintertime the highs are typically in the 0's while Gilahina River overnight low temperatures through the wintertime are in the-20's.
