  Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Alaska is often tougher than elsewhere, so keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. This stretch of Gilahina River in Valdez-Cordova Census Area Borough is 7.5 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III section. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in nature have a lot of people coming here. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This stretch is mid length, suitable for an afternoon
    trip. There are no other sections to paddle along Gilahina River than the McCarthy Road section. Whitewater paddling here in the Wrangell Mountains is a great experience. The wonderful Alaska scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream will make you feel
great. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are not so many other good spots for that around here.

Briefly about the general area:
During the months of summer, highs commonly are in the 60's at Gilahina River while nighttime lows are commonly in the 40's. For the duration of the winter this place gets highs in the 0's while Gilahina River overnight low temperatures during the winter are in the-20's.
Gilahina River is pretty dry regularly; the month of July is the wettest with most of the rain while April is the month with the least amount of precipitation.
