The McCarthy Road stretch of Gilahina River is 7.5 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III section of whitewater. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Alaska is often tougher than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that many runs in this state are not easy. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. The scenic beauty of Alaska and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. On this section you do get some distance, you can easily
run it on an afternoon. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The campgrounds here at Gilahina River are pretty good. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there
are not so many other good spots for that around here. There are no other stretches to paddle along Gilahina River than the McCarthy Road stretch. The Wrangell Mountains scenery is wonderful.
