This stretch of Gilahina River is 7.5 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III section of whitewater. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so if you're not from around here don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. The Wrangell Mountains scenery is wonderful. Gilahina River doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the McCarthy Road section is the only one. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay
the night, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. There's camping available near Gilahina River. The beautiful scenery of Alaska and the water flowing gracefully down Gilahina River are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Getting
some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, you can easily run it on an afternoon. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you won't find many other paddling rivers.
