The Summit Lake to Paxson Lake stretch of Gulkana River in Alaska is 12 miles long and has been rated as a class III section by American Whitewater. The wonderful Alaska scenery and the playfulness of the water have people coming here. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Alaska are harder than the national
norm, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. The beauty of the Alaska Range is a great plus for this river. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people
coming here. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you won't find a large number of other places. There's camping available near Gulkana River. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so pack your camp stove.
