The scenic beauty of Valdez-Cordova Census Area Borough and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The Summit Lake to Paxson Lake stretch of Gulkana River in Alaska is 12 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III section. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. You might be into
whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you won't find many other paddling places. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so why not pack your camp stove too. The Summit Lake to Paxson Lake section is one of a few paddling sections
in this river system. The campgrounds here at Gulkana River are pretty good. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Alaska you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less manageable. The wild scenery of the Alaska Range is great.
