The scenic beauty of Valdez-Cordova Census Area Borough and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The Summit Lake to Paxson Lake stretch of Gulkana River in Alaska is 12 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III section. Getting some good exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. | in this river system. The campgrounds here at Gulkana River are pretty good. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Alaska you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less manageable.
