  The Summit Lake to Paxson Lake section of Gulkana River in Valdez-Cordova Census Area Borough is 12 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class III section. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Alaska is often more difficult than elsewhere, so don't forget that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. The scenic beauty of Valdez-Cordova Census Area Borough and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. This river system has a few good paddling stretches and the Summit Lake to Paxson Lake section is one of them.
    Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. You can enjoy this stretch more if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Not too many
hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are not so many other good rivers for that around here. The wild scenery of the Alaska Range is great.
