  The nature scenery of Valdez-Cordova Census Area Borough and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Now this is a pretty long section, so better bring your camping gear along. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. The river winds through the Alaska Range and you get great scenery. The Paxson Lake to Sourdough Campground stretch of Gulkana River in Valdez-Cordova Census Area Borough is 81 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III section by American Whitewater.
    There are a few other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Great exercise and just hanging
out with mother nature will make you glad you came. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this area has a pretty small number of paddling places. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more challenging than the national average, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners.
