The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other states, so better not forget that rivers here are less forgiving. The wonderful North Slope Borough scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream will make you feel great. This stretch of Kongakut River is 60 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III section. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. There aren’t
any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. This is the only paddling section along Kongakut River.
A stretch of this length does require some preparations, perfect for a real wilderness adventure.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime highs at Kongakut River frequently tend to be in the 70's with nighttime lows in the 40's. High temperatures during the wintertime are normally in the-10's while Kongakut River nighttime low temperatures throughout the winter are in the-30's. Kongakut River gets very little rain; the wettest month of the year is regularly July, that's the one that rains the most while March is frequently the driest month.
