The scenic beauty of Alaska and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more challenging than the national average, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many runs in this state are not easy. This stretch of Kotsina River in Alaska is 42 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class V+ section. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. A stretch this long is of course
too much for a one day trip, perfect for a real wilderness adventure. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of spots for that. Kotsina River doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Upper Kotsina to Copper River section is the only one.
The river winds through the Wrangell Mountains and you get great scenery. There's camping available near Kotsina River. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
Briefly about the general area: For the duration of the summer months at Kotsina River temperatures are mostly in the 60's. Summer overnight lows plunge down to the 40's. During the wintertime the highs are regularly in the 0's, and nighttime lows during
the wintertime for Kotsina River tend to be in the-20's. Kotsina River gets very little rainfall; July is the month that gets the most rain, and the driest of the months is April.
