This section of McCarthy Creek in Valdez-Cordova Census Area Borough is 19 miles long and has been rated as a class III+(V+) section by American Whitewater. This stretch has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so go ahead and pack your camping stuff. The wild scenery of the Wrangell Mountains is great. This is the only paddling stretch along McCarthy Creek. The campgrounds here at McCarthy Creek are pretty good. The nature scenery of Alaska and the playfulness of the water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. No matter if you're whitewater
rafting or kayaking in this general area you won't find many other paddling places. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature have a lot of people coming here. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more
challenging, so better not forget that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. There are some good hotels near the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.
