Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Alaska is often tougher than elsewhere, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. The wonderful Valdez-Cordova Census Area Borough scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This stretch of McCarthy Creek in Alaska is 19 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class III+(V+) section. The campgrounds here at McCarthy Creek are pretty good. A good workout and just being
out on the river for a while will make you glad you came. The Close to Bonanza Ridge to McCarthy section is the only paddling section along McCarthy Creek. The river winds through the Wrangell Mountains and you get great scenery. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking
this area has a pretty small number of paddling places. Lodging is available near the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This section has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so pack your camping stuff.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime highs at McCarthy Creek generally tend to be in the 70's, and the night is quite colder of course, typically in the 40's. The wintertime brings highs down to the-10's; overnight lows at McCarthy Creek through the wintertime generally drop into the-30's. At McCarthy Creek you don’t see much precipitation; July is the month that gets the most rain, and the driest month is March.
