This section of Mendenhall River is 4 miles long and is a class II(III) section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The natural beauty of Juneau Borough and the water flowing gracefully down Mendenhall River are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have people coming from far and near. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Alaska are harder than the national norm,     so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many runs in this state are not easy. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a pretty small number of paddling places. No need to look hard for hotels, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Mendenhall River doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Mendenhall Lake to Riverside Drive stretch is the only one. This stretch has has enough mileage, good for a one day paddling trip. Briefly about the general area: This is such a wonderful river. Summer at Mendenhall River arrives with high temperatures in the 60's. Throughout the dark hours of summer temperatures drop down into the 40's. High temperatures during the winter   are normally in the 20's; winter nights come with lows in the 20's to Mendenhall River. A great deal of rainfall falls at Mendenhall River; most of the rain falls during October; the driest month is April. Since you're here at Mendenhall River why not pop by Mendenhall Valley, and hiking along the Spaulding Trail is delightful fun. Why not explore Hut Point also since you're here; do take a hike on the West Glacier Trail.
