The beautiful scenery of Alaska and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. The put-in location is a short drive from Juneau, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more challenging than the national average, so don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. The Mendenhall Lake to Riverside Drive stretch of Mendenhall River is 4 miles long and it is classified as a class II(III) section by American Whitewater. This stretch has has enough
mileage, it's perfect for a one day trip. Getting your paddling muscles activated and spending some quality time in nature are great attractions for lots of people. If you'll be staying in a hotel you're in luck, lodging is available very near the river, and if you make reservations
in advance you're all set. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with not too many other spots for that. The river winds through the Chugach Mountains and you get great scenery. The Mendenhall Lake to Riverside Drive stretch is the only paddling stretch along Mendenhall River. The campgrounds here at Mendenhall River are pretty good.
Briefly about the general area: And that's not all you can do here in the Chugach Mountains. Hut Point is in close proximity and always wonderful to check out, and
do take a hike on the Spaulding Trail. Summertime brings highs in the 60's to Mendenhall River while nighttime lows are frequently in the 40's. During the winter this place gets highs in the 20's, and night lows through the winter for Mendenhall River tend to be in the 20's.
Mendenhall River is right by the West Glacier Trail, and Mendenhall Valley is positively a brilliant spot to explore. This is such a wonderful river. A great deal of rain falls at Mendenhall River; most of the rain falls during October, and April is the month with the least moisture.
