The starting location is a reasonable drive from Juneau, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The average Alaska whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be harder to run than those in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. The natural beauty of Juneau Borough and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. There are some good hotels near the river, but you'd better reserve in
advance because these hotels fill up quick. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will have you coming back for more. This stretch of Mendenhall River in Juneau Borough is 4 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II(III) section.
This is the only paddling section along Mendenhall River. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you won't find a large number of other places. This stretch has has enough mileage, it's good length for a morning trip.
Briefly about the general area: This is such a wonderful river. During the summertime highs here at Mendenhall River reach the 60's; through summer nights temperatures are in the 40's. For the period of the wintertime the
highs are generally in the 20's while Mendenhall River nighttime low temperatures through the wintertime are in the 20's. Mendenhall River is right by the West Glacier Trail; do take a hike on the Spaulding Trail. You might want to pay a visit to Mendenhall Valley if you're
here at Mendenhall River, and why not stop by Hut Point also if you're here. Mendenhall River is a quite wet place generally with lots of rain; the wettest month of the year is frequently October, that's the one that rains the most, and April is when it's the driest.
