The average whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master in this state than those in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are less forgiving. The natural beauty of City & Borough of Juneau Borough and the playfulness of the water make the trip here worthwhile. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors will have you coming back for more. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's good length for a morning trip. There are nice comfortable hotels
here, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. The MCamp Grounduinness Creek to Mendenhall River section of Montana Creek in City & Borough of Juneau Borough is 4 miles long and has been
rated as a class II-III+ section by American Whitewater. When you're paddling down a Chugach Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. This is the only paddling stretch along Montana Creek. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you won't find a large number of other spots. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Juneau, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page.
Briefly about the general area: At Montana Creek during
the days of summer highs are in the 60's, and during summer nights temperatures are in the 40's. The winter comes with highs in the 20's, and nighttime lows in the 20's for Montana Creek. Montana Creek is a wet place that gets much rain; during the month of October you get the
most rain around here, and April on the other hand is the driest. Just can't get enough of the Chugach Mountains. While you're here at Montana Creek you can take a hike along the West Glacier Trail. Have a great hiking adventure along the Spaulding Trail, and why not stop by Mendenhall Peninsula also while you're here.
