The scenic beauty of Municipality of Anchorage Borough and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. There are no other sections to     paddle along Portage River than the Portage Lake to Turnagain Arm section. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors will make you glad you came. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you won't find many other paddling places. If you hurry you can run this section in a day but why not make it an overnighter, so go ahead and pack your camp stove. The Chugach Mountains scenery is wonderful. Briefly about the general area: Summertime brings highs in the 60's to Portage River; all through summer nights temperatures are in the 40's. For the duration of the wintertime the highs are ordinarily in the 20's, and night lows in the 10's for Portage River. If you're here at Portage River, checking out Explorer Glacier   is a must.
