The Upper gravel bar to Copper River stretch of Sanford River is 35 miles long and it is classified as a class II section by American Whitewater. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often tougher than in other states, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are less forgiving. The beautiful scenery of Alaska and the cool fresh water beats anything. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. There are no other stretches to paddle along Sanford River than the Upper
gravel bar to Copper River stretch. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good spots for that around here. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
Now this is a pretty long section, perfect for a real wilderness adventure.
Briefly about the general area: High temperatures at Sanford River through the summertime months are in the 60's with overnight lows in the 40's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 0's with temperatures at Sanford River dipping down into the-20's during winter nights. At Sanford River you don’t see much rain; July is when you get the most rain here while April is mostly the driest month.
