Alaska whitewater - Sheep River, Talkeetna Mountains, Matanuska-Susitna Borough
Matanuska-Susitna
county,
Close to Glacier to Talkeetna River section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS IV(V+) 50 miles
Could anyone there furnish the complete length of the Sheep River? Thank you. Says Larry L. Miller
The wonderful Matanuska-Susitna Borough scenery and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. The Close to Glacier to Talkeetna River section of Sheep River is 50 miles long and has been rated as a class IV(V+) section by American Whitewater. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Sheep River doesn't have a lot of paddling
sections, the Close to Glacier to Talkeetna River section is the only one. The wild scenery of the Talkeetna Mountains is great. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. A stretch this long is of course too much for a
one day trip, so make sure you pack enough food along with your camping gear. The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Alaska are often more challenging than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy. There's camping available near Sheep River. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are not so many other good places for that around here.
Briefly about the general area: Summertime at Sheep River comes with high temperatures
in the 60's. When the night sets in temperatures drop down into the 40's. Daytime highs through the wintertime are in the 10's, and winter nights come with lows in the 0's to Sheep River. From a rainfall point of view Sheep River is a relatively normal location; the wettest month of the year is mostly August, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest month is May.
