Alaska whitewater - Sixmile River, Chugach Mountains, Kenai Penninsula Borough
Kenai Penninsula
county,
East Fork of Six Mile to Sunshine section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS V 9.3 miles
I did 6 mile this summer, what a rush!!! Some things to know... it is a series of three canyons, the first two are considered more class IV but the third canyon is definitley class V. There are two companies that operate on the river, Chugach Outdoor and Nova. I went with Chugach but I hear that they are both good. I reccomend (and give an AWA, shout out to) the guides ''Pizza'' and ''Charlie'' from Chugach outdoor, great people! The canyons are very narrow. Oh and the last thing. You have to wear a dry suit and complete a swim test wearing it (in the
river) before you can go. The water is frigid and there is no room for error. Make sure to get a suit with a good neck gasket. Mine was loose and water rushed in the second I started swimming brrrr! If you're looking for a great place to stay check out Alaska Wildland Adventures
in Cooper Landing. Says Mike
The East Fork of Six Mile to Sunshine stretch of Sixmile River in Alaska is 9.3 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class V section. The nature scenery of Kenai Penninsula Borough and the playfulness of the water will make you feel great. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling rivers. This stretch is mid length, good for a one day paddling trip. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book
a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Alaska tend to be more challenging than the national average, so if you're not from around here don't forget that lots
of rivers here are not for beginners. This is the only paddling stretch along Sixmile River. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. Whitewater paddling here in the Chugach Mountains is a great experience.
