This stretch of Talkeetna River in Matanuska-Susitna Borough is 54 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class III-IV section. The scenic beauty of Alaska and the playfulness of the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state
tend to be more challenging than the national average, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good rivers. A stretch this
long is of course too much for a one day trip, perfect for a real wilderness adventure. This is the only paddling section along Talkeetna River. The wild scenery of the Talkeetna Mountains is great. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near.
Briefly about the general area: Summer at Talkeetna River arrives with high temperatures in the 60's, and the nighttime is somewhat cooler of course, usually in the 40's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 10's with temperatures
at Talkeetna River dipping down into the 0's all through winter nights. Talkeetna River is a good place of typical rainfall; August is when you get the most rain here, and May on the other hand is the driest.
