The nature scenery of Matanuska-Susitna Borough and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream make the trip here worthwhile. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Alaska is often more difficult than elsewhere, so you'd better keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. This is the only paddling stretch along Talkeetna River. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The Stephan Lake to Susitna River at Talkeetna Village section of Talkeetna River in Matanuska-Susitna Borough is 54 miles long
and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class III-IV section. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good spots. Whitewater paddling here in the Talkeetna Mountains is a great experience. Getting
your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while have people coming from far and near. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. A stretch of this length does require some preparations, so make sure you pack enough food along with your camping gear.
