This stretch of Tana River is 36 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class IV section of whitewater. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often tougher than in other states, so keep in mind that many runs in this state are not easy. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots
of people. The nature scenery of Alaska and the water flowing gracefully down Tana River beats anything. Tana River doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Gravel Bar to Chitina River section is the only one. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't
matter, this is an area with plenty of places for that. Now this is a pretty long section, so better bring your camping gear along. The river winds through the Chugach Mountains and you get great scenery.
Briefly about the general area: Through the summertime months at Tana River highs are mostly in the 60's, and during summer nights temperatures are in the 40's. For the duration of the winter the highs are ordinarily in the 0's, and throughout the dark hours in the wintertime at Tana River temperatures sink to the-20's. At Tana River you don’t see much precipitation; the month with most of the rain is July, and the driest month is April.
