Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Alaska is often more difficult than elsewhere, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. This is a pretty decent length section, it's good length for a morning trip. Getting your paddling muscles activated and a chance to spend some time outdoors are sure to keep you coming back for more. This stretch of Tonsina River is 7 miles long and is a class III-IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The scenic beauty of Alaska and the playfulness of the
water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. There are no other sections to paddle along Tonsina River than the Richardson Highway crossing to Lower Tonsina section. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to
drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots.
Briefly about the general area: For the period of the summer months at Tonsina River highs are commonly in the 60's. Summer overnight lows plunge down to the 40's. The wintertime comes with highs in the 0's, and through the dark hours in the wintertime at Tonsina River temperatures dip to the-20's. Tonsina
River is a location that is pretty dry frequently; the wettest month of the year is mostly July, that's the one that rains the most; April meanwhile is the driest month.
