If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so better not forget that rivers here are not as easy as elsewhere. The wonderful Pinal County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Gila River will make you feel great. A good workout and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This section is long enough for an overnight |
trip if you take your time, so pack your camp stove. The Kelvin to Ashurst-Hayden Dam stretch is the only paddling stretch along Gila River.

If you feel like a little side tour, try Walnut Canyon. Summertime highs at Gila River generally
| tend to be in the 90's while night lows are generally in the 70's. Highs through the winter are ordinarily in the 60's while the cold winter nights at Gila River are in the 40's.
Gila River is a location that is pretty dried out ordinarily; of all the months in a year December is the one with the most rain, and the driest month is June. | |
