  The Gleason Flats to Horseshoe Bend section of Salt River is 19 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class III-IV section of whitewater. The put-in location is a short drive from Payson, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The nature scenery of Gila County and the playfulness of the water will make you feel great. The wild scenery of the Mogollon Rim Mountains is great. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. You can enjoy this
    stretch more if you take your time, so pack your camping stuff. Whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state is often more difficult than elsewhere, so if you're not from around here don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. Some people prefer whitewater
rafting and some kayaking, either way there are not so many other good places for that around here. There are some good stretches to paddle in this river system, the Gleason Flats to Horseshoe Bend stretch is one of them. There's camping available near Salt River. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car.
