Arizona whitewater - Salt River, Mogollon Rim Mountains, Gila County
Gila
county,
Gleason Flats to Horseshoe Bend section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS III-IV 19 miles
The wonderful Arizona scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Salt River make the trip here worthwhile. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so better not forget that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you won't find a large number of other places. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others too. If you're coming from Payson it's not a long drive
at all to the starting location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. If you have the time you can make this a two day trip, so go ahead and pack your sleeping bag. This section of Salt River in Gila County is 19 miles long and has been rated as a class
III-IV section by American Whitewater. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. The Mogollon Rim Mountains scenery is wonderful. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp.
Briefly about the general area: A short journey to Clay Spring is always worthwhile, and you might also want to pay a visit to Upper Corral Canyon if you're here at Salt
River. Around Salt River you don’t get a lot of rainfall; the month with most of the rain is August while June is frequently the driest month. And if that's not sufficient there's lots more fun stuff to do in the Mogollon Rim Mountains. A trip to Salt River wouldn't be complete
without taking a look at Hackberry Spring. The warmest time of the year at Salt River arrives with high temperatures in the 90's. When the night sets in temperatures drop down into the 50's. The cold days of the wintertime come with highs in the 50's, and nighttime lows in the 20's for Salt River.
