The scenic beauty of Gila County and the water flowing gracefully down Salt River are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. The put-in location is a short drive from Payson, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of
people. You can enjoy this stretch more if you take your time, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Since you're on this site you are
probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with not too many other spots for that. The Gleason Flats to Horseshoe Bend stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. The Mogollon Rim Mountains scenery is wonderful. The Gleason Flats to Horseshoe Bend stretch of Salt River in Gila County is 19 miles long and it is classified as a class III-IV section by American Whitewater. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp.
Briefly about the general area: Salt River is usually a pretty
dried out place; most of the rain falls during August while June is the month with the least amount of precipitation. For the duration of the long summer days at Salt River highs are commonly in the 90's. Through the dark hours of summer temperatures descend down into the 50's.
During the wintertime highs are regularly in the 50's, and winter nights come with lows in the 20's to Salt River. Having a brilliant time in the Mogollon Rim Mountains is uncomplicated. Clay Spring is a scenic spot to check out while you're at Salt River. A short journey to Hackberry Spring is always worthwhile, and a brilliant spot to check out is Upper Corral Canyon.
