Arizona whitewater, Salt River

Gila county, Gleason Flats to Horseshoe Bend section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS III-IV     19 miles
The Gleason Flats to Horseshoe Bend section of Salt River in Gila County is 19 miles long and is a class III-IV section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. The beautiful scenery of Gila County and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream beats anything. The Mogollon Rim Mountains scenery is wonderful. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, there are not so many other good spots
for that around here. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Arizona tend to be more challenging than the national average, so don't forget that many runs in this state are not easy. The starting location is a short drive
from Payson, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. There are plenty of other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take
your time, so pack your sleeping bag. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature have people coming from far and near.

Briefly about the general area:
The Coon Spring Trail is a good hiking trail in the vicinity of Salt River, and a short visit to Clay Spring is always worthwhile. All the outdoors amusing stuff in the Mogollon Rim Mountains will keep you coming back persistently. If the weather is pleasant here at Salt River, you can go for a hike along the Rim-Moody Point Trail; a spree to Salt River wouldn't be complete without taking a look at Hackberry Spring.
