Gila county, Gleason Flats to Horseshoe Bend section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS III-IV     19 miles
The scenic beauty of Gila County and the water flowing gracefully down Salt River are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that lots of rivers here are not for beginners. The put-in location is a short drive from Payson, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. A good workout and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of
people. You can enjoy this stretch more if you take your time, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Since you're on this site you are
probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this is an area with not too many other spots for that. The Gleason Flats to Horseshoe Bend stretch is one of a few paddling stretches in this river system. The Mogollon Rim Mountains scenery is wonderful. The Gleason Flats to Horseshoe Bend stretch of Salt River in Gila County is 19 miles long and it is classified as a class III-IV section by American Whitewater.
