Arizona whitewater - Salt River, Mogollon Rim Mountains, Gila County Gila county, Highway 60 to Mescal Rapid section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.   CLASS III-IV     7 miles   The Highway 60 to Mescal Rapid stretch of Salt River is 7 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class III-IV section. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Arizona tend to be more challenging than the national average, so if you're not from around here don't forget that rivers here are less forgiving. The nature scenery of Gila County and the cool fresh water beats anything. Getting some good exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come. Whitewater paddling here in the Mogollon Rim Mountains     is a great experience. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. On this section you do get some distance, good for a one day paddling trip. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you won't find many other paddling spots. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. Briefly about the general area: It is very dehydrated here at Salt River usually; of all the months in a year August is the one with the most rain, and June on the other hand is the driest. During the summer months at Salt River temperatures are usually in the 90's. Once the sun is down it plunges down to the 50's. High temperatures through the   winter are normally in the 50's; after the sun is down through the wintertime temperatures at Salt River plunge into the 20's. But wait, there's more enjoyable things to do in the Mogollon Rim Mountains. Near Salt River you come across Phillips Canyon which is a brilliant place to take a look at. Mule Hoof Bend is an out of the ordinary thing to see if you're here at Salt River; Mormon Spring is an inspiring place to check out while here.
