CLASS II-IV     60 miles
The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Payson, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Arizona are often tougher than in other states, so keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less manageable. The wonderful Arizona scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water will make you feel great. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. This is one of a small number of paddling stretches in this river system, there are a few others
too. When you're paddling down a Mogollon Rim Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a pretty small number of paddling spots. Great exercise and just being out on the river for
a while will make you glad you came. This stretch of Salt River in Gila County is 60 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class II-IV section of whitewater. A stretch this long is of course too much for a one day trip, so it looks like you will be camping out. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.
