If you're coming from Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale it's not a long drive at all to the starting location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around here you won't find a large number of other places. There are no other stretches to paddle along     Salt River than the Stewart Mountain Dam to Granite Reef Dam stretch. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Arizona are harder than the national norm, so you'd better keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your sleeping bag.
