Gila
county,
Box section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS IV(V) 2 miles
The Box section of Tonto Creek in Arizona is 2 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class IV(V) section. The scenic beauty of Arizona and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The wild scenery of the Mogollon Rim Mountains is great. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This is a pretty short section so better bring some good walking shoes. You can pitch a tent or
park your RV at a nearby campground. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with not too many other rivers for that. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature have a lot of people coming here. The Box stretch is the only
paddling stretch along Tonto Creek. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Arizona you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are not easy.
Briefly about the general area: If you're here, you might as well pop by Reed Gulch, and Reed Spring is a good local attraction. Tonto Creek gets very little precipitation; the month with most of the rain is August while June is generally the driest month. Yeah, come up here to the Mogollon Rim
Mountains for a good time. Don't leave Tonto Creek without first going for a hike along the Del Shay Trail, and Mud Spring is always fun to check out. At Tonto Creek throughout the months of summer highs are in the 90's, and during the night it cools down to the 50's. The wintertime
comes with highs in the 50's while the cold winter nights at Tonto Creek are in the 20's. At this river you will never have a bad time. Good hiking is available along the Old Mail Trail.
