Arizona whitewater - Tonto Creek, Mogollon Rim Mountains, Gila County
Gila
county,
Box section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS IV(V) 2 miles
The Box stretch of Tonto Creek is 2 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class IV(V) section. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Arizona you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so you'd better keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. The natural beauty of Gila County and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking
around here you won't find a large number of other spots. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature have people coming from far and near. Tonto Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Box section is the only one. The nearby hotels are a bit away
from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The beauty of the Mogollon Rim Mountains is a great plus for this river. This is a short paddling stretch so better bring some good walking shoes.
Briefly about the general area: It is very dry here at Tonto Creek usually; of all the months in a year August is the one with the most rain, and June is when it's the driest.
