county,
Childs to Horseshoe Reservoir section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS I-III 25 miles
The Childs to Horseshoe Reservoir stretch of Verde River is 25 miles long and has been rated as a class I-III section by American Whitewater. The average Arizona whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit harder to master than those in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. This section has enough mileage
for an overnight trip, so pack your sleeping bag. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come.
The nature scenery of Yavapai County and the water flowing gracefully down Verde River are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. There are plenty of other sections in this river system that can be paddled as well. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. The river winds through the Mogollon Rim Mountains and you get great scenery.
Briefly about the general area: High temperatures at Verde River through the days of summer are in the 100's with overnight lows in the 60's. Throughout the wintertime highs are regularly
in the 50's, and overnight lows in the 20's for Verde River. But wait, there's more entertaining things to do in the Mogollon Rim Mountains. Why not take a refreshing hike along the Table Mountain Trail, and the Verde River Trail Number Eleven offers hiking at its best. This
is a really good river. Red Creek Rapids is a great local attraction; don't leave Verde River without first checking out Mule Shoe Bend. At Verde River you don’t see much precipitation; throughout the month of August you get the most rain around here; May is when it's the driest.
