The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in Arkansas are often more forgiving than in other states, so you'd better keep in mind that the rivers in this state are less demanding. The put-in location is a short drive from Harrison, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. When you're paddling down a Boston Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. This section of Big Piney Creek is 16 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III section by American Whitewater.
The Walnut to Ft. Douglas stretch is one of many paddling stretches in this river system. You can enjoy this stretch more if you take your time, so why not pack your camping stuff too. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. The natural beauty of
Arkansas and the cool fresh water are reasons enough to come here and paddle. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while are great reasons to come. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area with plenty of places for that.
Briefly about the general area: At Big Piney Creek during the days of summer highs are in the 90's; through
summer nights temperatures are in the 60's. Highs during the winter are ordinarily in the 40's, and after the sun is down through the winter temperatures at Big Piney Creek dip into the 20's. If you have a thing about the outdoors you'll have a thing about it here in the Boston
Mountains. Big Piney Creek is a pretty wet place typically with a good deal of precipitation; the wettest month of the year is typically May, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest month is January. There's wonderful hiking along the Turkey Trail; hiking is a popular thing to do around Big Piney Creek; Boston Cutoff is a wonderful local trail.
