The Devils Den State Park to Highway 220 stretch of Blackburn Creek in Crawford County is 8 miles long and has been rated as a class II-III section by American Whitewater. The wonderful Crawford County scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Blackburn Creek have people coming here. The average Arkansas whitewater rafting or kayaking river tends to be a bit easier to master than those in other states, so keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. On this section you do get some distance, suitable for an afternoon trip. Not too
many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. There's camping available near Blackburn Creek. Great exercise and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back
for more. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way there are lots of good places for that around here. This is the only paddling section along Blackburn Creek. The river winds through the Boston Mountains and you get great scenery. If you're coming from Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost.
Briefly about the general area: Hiking along the Butterfield Hiking Trail is
wonderful fun. Throughout the summer months at Blackburn Creek highs are mostly in the 90's with overnight lows in the 60's. For the duration of the winter highs are ordinarily in the 40's while the cold winter nights at Blackburn Creek are in the 20's. Blackburn Creek sees
pretty high levels of rain; the wettest month of the year is generally May, that's the one that rains the most, and the driest of the months is January.
