Arkansas whitewater - Buffalo River, Boston Mountains, Newton County
Newton
county,
Ponca to Kyles section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II 10.6 miles
This run was the first run I had ever done in a Kayak. I was a little scetchy at first but later realized that a kayak is 100% more safe than a canoe and quite a bit more versitile as well. By the end of the run I was trying to find the fastest spots and hiking the better rapids more than once to hit again. Now with more rivers and expierience under my paddle. I would still do this run again with friends for a enjoyable float with a few moderate rapids that can be challenging for the unprepared. If you plan to take those not real comfortable in a kayak
on a river, this would be a great start for them. Not for seeking heavy whitewater. Scenery is A+++, its reputation speaks for itself. If those seeking a little more rapids and a little faster gradient start at Boxley instead of Ponca to plan your Buffalo trip. Says Josh Winters
If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Arkansas you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so don't forget that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. If you're coming from Harrison it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, as you can see on the road map further down. The beautiful scenery of Newton County and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way this
area has a large number of paddling spots. When you're paddling down a Boston Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd better reserve
in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This stretch is long enough for an overnight trip if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your camp stove. The Ponca to Kyles section of Buffalo River in Newton County is 10.6 miles long and is according to American Whitewater
a class II section of whitewater. Getting a good workout and just being out on the river for a while have a lot of people coming here. This river system is full of great paddling sections, the Ponca to Kyles section is just one of them. There are campgrounds quite near the river
where you can camp.
Briefly about the general area: If you want to stop at some attention-grabbing stuff, stop at Jim Bluff, and Jackies Big Hollow is a pleasant site to take a look at. Life's too short to enjoy all the entertaining stuff in the Boston Mountains. If
you're here at Buffalo River, checking out Big Bluff is a must, and taking a little spree to nearby California Point is a fine idea. Summer brings highs in the 90's to Buffalo River. When the night sets in temperatures descend down into the 60's. High temperatures through the winter
are normally in the 40's, and after the sun is down throughout the winter temperatures at Buffalo River fall into the 20's. The high level of rain makes Buffalo River a quite wet place; the month with most of the rain is May, and the driest month of the year is January. This river is so perfect.
