  Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Arkansas is often easier than elsewhere, so keep in mind that many of the sections here are safe for beginners. The wonderful Arkansas scenery and the water flowing gracefully down Cossatot River have people coming here. This is a bit of a short stretch so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. The County Road 31 to Highway 246 section of Cossatot River in Polk County is 3.4 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II+ section. A bit of exercise and just hanging
    out with mother nature will make you glad you came. The beauty of the Ouachita Mountains is a great plus for this river. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a large number of paddling places. The campgrounds here at Cossatot River are pretty good. There
aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too.

Briefly about the general area:
Put some time aside to spend at Gillham Springs since you're here at Cossatot River, and Long Hollow is another pleasant site to go to nearby. All the water falling down from the sky makes Cossatot River a wet place; of all the months in a year May is the one with the most rain, and
 
the driest of the months is January.
Summertime highs at Cossatot River frequently tend to be in the 80's while night lows are ordinarily in the 60's. Highs during the winter are commonly in the 40's with temperatures at Cossatot River dipping down into the 20's all through winter nights. Life's too short to enjoy all the enjoyable stuff in the Ouachita Mountains.
