The starting location is a short drive from Harrison, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The wonderful Newton / Pope County scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water attract people from near and far. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you can camp. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good places. Hurricane Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the Cub Creek to Big Piney section is the only one. If you've
been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. You can enjoy this section more if you take your time, so go ahead and pack your sleeping
bag. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great attractions for lots of people. This section of Hurricane Creek in Newton / Pope County is 10 miles long and it is classified as a class II-III+ section by American Whitewater. The beautiful Boston Mountains scenery is an added bonus. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
Briefly about the general area: Hurricane Creek is a wet place that gets a great deal of
precipitation; of all the months in a year May is the one with the most rain, and the driest of the months is January. High temperatures at Hurricane Creek throughout the summer are in the 80's. For the period of the moonlight hours it's typically in the 60's. Throughout the winter the highs are generally in the 40's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at Hurricane Creek.
