The scenic beauty of Pope County and the water flowing gracefully down Illinois Bayou are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often easier than in other states, so keep in mind that rivers here are less demanding. The campgrounds here at Illinois Bayou are pretty good. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good places. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too. The
river winds through the Boston Mountains and you get great scenery. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's perfect for a one day trip. The Bayou Bluff to Hector stretch of Illinois Bayou in Pope County is 8 miles long and has been determined by American
Whitewater to be a class II section. If you're coming from Russellville it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Getting a good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great reasons to come.
