Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Arkansas tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so better not forget that rivers here are less demanding. This section of Illinois Bayou in Arkansas is 10 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class I-II section. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. The wonderful Pope County scenery and
the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way this is an area with plenty of spots for that. This is not the only paddling stretch in this river system, there are others too. The campgrounds here
at Illinois Bayou are pretty good. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. This section has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so why not pack your camp stove too. Whitewater paddling here in the Boston Mountains is a great experience.
Briefly about the general area: All the water falling down from the sky makes Illinois Bayou a wet place; during May this area sees the most rain, and January is when it's the driest.
During the summertime at Illinois Bayou highs are mostly in the 90's. Through the dark hours of summer temperatures drop down into the 60's. The wintertime brings highs down to the 40's; winter nights come with lows in the 20's to Illinois Bayou. While staying at Illinois Bayou you could always look at Epson Hollow.
