Whitewater rafting and kayaking in Arkansas is often easier than elsewhere, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many runs in this state are very easy. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling places. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. The Shady Lake     to Highway 84 section of Saline River in Howard County is 4.5 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class II-III section. The campgrounds here at Saline River are pretty good. On this section you do get some distance, you can easily run it on an afternoon. There are a few other stretches in this river system that can be paddled as well. Whitewater paddling here in the Ouachita Mountains is a great experience. Great exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are great reasons to come. Briefly about the general area: All the water falling down from the sky makes Saline River a wet site; most of the rain falls throughout May, and the driest month is January. The warmest time of the year at Saline River arrives with high temperatures in the 80's with overnight lows in the 60's.
