The Gum Branch to ELFB section of Stepp Creek in Newton County is 1.25 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class III-IV+ section. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so you'd better keep in mind that quite a few of the sections here are pretty easy. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking there are lots of good spots for that around here. The nature scenery of Newton County and the water flowing gracefully down Stepp Creek are in
themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. The starting location is a short drive from Harrison, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. The Boston Mountains scenery
is wonderful. A good workout and spending some quality time in nature are great attractions for lots of people. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. This is a very short stretch so better bring some good walking shoes. There are no other sections to paddle along Stepp Creek than the Gum Branch to ELFB section.

Creek is a wet spot that gets a lot of rainfall; the month of May is the wettest with most of the rain, and the driest of the months is January. For the period of the summertime months at Stepp Creek temperatures are ordinarily in the 80's, and the overnight is a tad chillier
of course, generally in the 60's. For the duration of the winter this place gets highs in the 40's with winter lows in the 20's overnight here at Stepp Creek.
