The wonderful Newton County scenery and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream beats anything. If you're coming from Harrison it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more forgiving, so don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very demanding. This is the only paddling stretch along Stepp Creek. You might be into whitewater rafting
or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, around here you'll find a large number of good places. This is a very short stretch so you'd better be prepared to walk your kayak back to put-in a few times. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while have people coming
from far and near. Not too many hotels nearby, you'll have to drive a bit to get to one, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. The Gum Branch to ELFB stretch of Stepp Creek in Arkansas is 1.25 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class III-IV+ section. When you're paddling down a Boston Mountains river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground.
Briefly about the general area: Stepp Creek is a wet location that gets
a great deal of rainfall; May is when you get the most rain here while January is the month with the least amount of precipitation. Throughout the summertime highs here at Stepp Creek reach the 80's. Throughout the dark hours of summer temperatures sink down into the 60's. The
winter comes with highs in the 40's, and nighttime lows at Stepp Creek through the wintertime generally sink into the 20's. Watson Hollow is a nice place to take a look at nearby.
