This section of Stepp Creek in Arkansas is 1.25 miles long and has been determined by American Whitewater to be a class III-IV+ section. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in Arkansas tend to be more forgiving than the national average, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are less demanding. The Gum Branch to ELFB section is the only paddling section along Stepp Creek. Whitewater paddling here in the Boston Mountains is a great experience. Getting some good exercise and just hanging out with mother nature will make you glad
you came. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This stretch is very short so no need to bring snacks. The scenic beauty of Newton County and the water flowing gracefully down Stepp Creek make the trip here worthwhile. If you're coming from Harrison it's not a long drive
at all to the put-in location, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way there are lots of good spots for that around here.
Briefly about the general area: Through the summer highs here at Stepp Creek get into the 80's, and all through summer nights temperatures are in the
60's. Through the winter this place gets highs in the 40's while Stepp Creek night low temperatures throughout the wintertime are in the 20's. Watson Hollow is a nice place to pop by nearby. Stepp Creek gets a good deal of water; the month with most of the rain is May while January is the month with the least amount of precipitation.
