If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside Arkansas you might find the rivers here a bit more manageable, so you'd better keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are suitable for beginners. The starting point is not too far from Harrison, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The Southern Fork to Richland Creek stretch of Sulphur Creek in Arkansas is 6 miles long and is a class III-V(V+) section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. This stretch has has enough mileage, it's perfect for a one day trip.
You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The beauty of the Boston Mountains is a great plus for this river. There are no other sections to paddle along Sulphur Creek than
the Southern Fork to Richland Creek section. The natural beauty of Arkansas and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream attract people from near and far. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling rivers. There's camping available near Sulphur Creek. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature have a lot of people coming here.
Briefly about the general area: Through the warmest time of the year, highs ordinarily are
in the 80's at Sulphur Creek. For the period of the dark hours of summer temperatures sink down into the 60's. The winter comes with highs in the 40's with temperatures at Sulphur Creek dipping down into the 20's through winter nights. Sulphur Creek sees pretty high levels of rainfall; May is the wettest month with most rain, and January is when it's the driest. A tour to Bearcat Hollow is always fun.
