The starting location is a short drive from Truckee-Grass Valley, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The wonderful California scenery and the water flowing gracefully down American River - North Fork are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in California are often tougher than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that a lot of the rivers here are not suitable for beginners. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if
you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The river winds through the Northern Sierra Nevada and you get great scenery. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this is an area
with plenty of rivers for that. Great exercise and spending some quality time in nature are great reasons to come. This stretch of American River - North Fork in Placer County is 5 miles long and is a class II-III section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby. This stretch is mid length, you can easily run it on an afternoon. The Colfax-Foresthill Road Bridge to Ponderosa Way Bridge section is one of many paddling sections in this river system.
Briefly about the general area: Big Bend is an interesting
thing to distinguish while you're here at American River - North Fork, and Quail Trap Ravine is another glorious place to pop by close by. High temperatures at American River - North Fork throughout the summertime months are in the 80's, and during the night it cools down to the
50's. Highs through the winter are ordinarily in the 40's, and overnight lows at American River - North Fork during the winter mostly dip into the 20's. Not enough hours in a day to enjoy the Northern Sierra Nevada. American River - North Fork sees pretty high levels of precipitation; January is when you get the most rain here while July is the month with the least amount of precipitation.
