The scenic beauty of California and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water beats anything. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside California you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so you'd better keep in mind that many of the sections     here are not safe for beginners. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. Some people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good rivers. The Strawberry to Kyburz section of American River - South Fork in California is 9.6 miles long and is according to American Whitewater a class IV-V section of whitewater. Whitewater paddling here in the Northern Sierra Nevada is a great experience. A bit of exercise and just hanging out with mother nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. This is a pretty decent length section, suitable for an afternoon trip. This is not the only paddling section in this river system, there are others too.
