California whitewater - Arroyo Mocho River, Alameda County
Alameda
county,
Above Waterfalls to Mines Road bridge section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS IV-V+ 8 miles
The natural beauty of California and the cool fresh water make the trip here worthwhile. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers here more demanding, so keep in mind that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. A bit of exercise and a chance to spend some time outdoors have a lot of people coming here. There are campgrounds quite near the river where you
can camp. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your car. Since you're on this site you are probably into whitewater rafting or kayaking, either way around
here you won't find a large number of other spots. The Above Waterfalls to Mines Road bridge section of Arroyo Mocho River is 8 miles long and is a class IV-V+ section of whitewater according to American Whitewater. This stretch is mid length, good for a one day paddling trip. The Above Waterfalls to Mines Road bridge section is one of a few paddling sections in this river system.
Briefly about the general area: At Arroyo Mocho River during the summertime highs are in the 80's while night lows are typically in the 60's. The wintertime comes
with highs in the 50's with winter lows in the 30's overnight here at Arroyo Mocho River. The beauty of mother nature reveals herself at Mud Springs; don't leave Arroyo Mocho River without first paying a visit to Mendenhall Springs. Arroyo Mocho River is a location that is rather dehydrated mostly; of all the months in a year January is the one with the most rain while July is ordinarily the driest month.
This is a seasonal creek, not a river. The picture below is from early April. The only possible way to kayak or raft this would be during or immediately after a major storm. And the brush on the creek banks would likely be your undoing. I've never heard of anyone ever kayaking this creek.
