The Highway 174 Bridge to Lake Combie stretch of Bear River in Nevada / Placer County is 11 miles long and it is classified as a class II-V section by American Whitewater. The put-in location is a short drive from Truckee-Grass Valley, if you're not familiar with the area there's a road map further down the page. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more challenging, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that rivers here are less forgiving. If you hurry you can run this section in a
day but why not make it an overnighter, so why not pack your sleeping bag too. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but do book a room before you come because it is a very popular destination. The beauty of the Northern Sierra
Nevada is a great plus for this river. The beautiful scenery of California and the playfulness of the water attract people from near and far. A bit of exercise and just being out on the river for a while will make you glad you came. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, in this general area you'll find lots of paddling rivers. There's camping available near Bear River. Bear River doesn't have a lot of paddling stretches, the Highway 174 Bridge to Lake Combie stretch is the only one.

Hidden Valley is a delightful location to go to near Bear River. A large amount of rain falls at Bear River; the month with most of the rain is January, and the driest of the months is July. Through the summer at Bear River temperatures are ordinarily in the 80's. For the period
of the moonlight hours it's generally in the 50's. For the duration of the winter highs are in the 40's; after the sun is down all through the winter temperatures at Bear River fall into the 20's.
