The Highway 174 Bridge to Lake Combie stretch of Bear River in California is 11 miles long and has been rated as a class II-V section by American Whitewater. The nature scenery of Nevada / Placer County and the cool fresh water attract people from near and far. If you're coming from Truckee-Grass Valley it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, please print out a copy of the road map further down the page so you won’t get lost. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, but if you don’t have reservations you might end up sleeping in your
car. This is the only paddling section along Bear River. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just hanging out with mother nature have a lot of people coming here. If you've been whitewater rafting and kayaking outside this state you might find the rivers here a bit more
challenging, so don't forget that many of the rivers here are not very forgiving. This section has enough mileage for an overnight trip, so pack your camp stove. Whitewater paddling here in the Northern Sierra Nevada is a great experience. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you'll find lots of paddling spots. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: For the period of the summertime months highs here at Bear River get into the 80's with overnight lows in
the 50's. Highs during the winter are typically in the 40's while the cold winter nights at Bear River are in the 20's. All the water falling down from the sky makes Bear River a wet site; during the month of January you get the most rain around here; July on the other hand is the driest. A fine spot near Bear River is Hidden Valley.
