California whitewater - Bear Creek, Southern Cascade Range, Shasta County
Shasta
county,
Hydro to Highway 44 section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS IV(V+) 9.5 miles
The sections for whitewater rafting and kayaking here in California are often more challenging than in other states, so better not forget that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. The starting point is not too far from Redding, as you can see on the road map further down. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. The Hydro to Highway 44 stretch is the only paddling stretch along Bear Creek. Getting some good exercise and spending some
quality time in nature are great reasons to come. You might be into whitewater rafting or kayaking or both, doesn't matter, this area has a large number of paddling spots. When you're paddling down a Southern Cascade Range river like this one you always get great scenery along
the way too. The Hydro to Highway 44 stretch of Bear Creek is 9.5 miles long and it is classified as a class IV(V+) section by American Whitewater. The natural beauty of California and the beautiful way the water current moves down the stream are reasons enough to come here and paddle. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, good for a one day paddling trip. And of course, there are campgrounds nearby.
Briefly about the general area: Through the summertime, highs usually are in the 90's at Bear Creek, and the night is a

Bear Creek is in close proximity to Townsend Gulch which is unquestionably worth a visit.
