California whitewater - Big Sur River, Santa Lucia Range, Monterey County

Monterey county, Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park to Motels section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.

CLASS II+     4 miles
The wonderful California scenery and the sparkling of the sunlight on the water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. The Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park to Motels stretch of Big Sur River in Monterey County is 4 miles long and has been rated as a class II+ section by American Whitewater. If you're coming from Salinas it's not a long drive at all to the put-in location, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. This section is long enough to enjoy a good non stop paddle, it's good length for a morning trip. The Pfeiffer
Big Sur State Park to Motels section is the only paddling section along Big Sur River. Getting your paddling muscles activated and just being out on the river for a while are sure to keep you coming back for more. Whitewater rafting and kayaking spots in this state tend to be more
challenging than the national average, so keep in mind that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking this area has a pretty small number of paddling rivers. If you're a camper you can camp at one of the great campgrounds nearby. The beautiful Santa Lucia Range scenery is an added bonus. The nearby hotels are a bit away from the river, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set.

Briefly about the general area:
Big Sur River is frequently a pretty waterless location; through

the month of January you get the most rain around here, and July is when it's the driest. This river is so great. Pfeiffer Gulch is a good location to explore, and nothing beats kicking back at Pfeiffer Beach.
During the warm days of summer, highs generally are in the 70's at Big Sur River, and during the night it cools down to the 50's. Highs through the winter are generally in the 50's with winter lows in the 40's overnight here at Big Sur River. Yep, outdoors amusing stuff truly is abundant here in the Santa Lucia Range. Pfeiffer Falls is an inspiring site to have a look at while you're here, and there are splendid places to discover along the Buzzards Roost Trail.
Enjoy a lazy day on the beach at Wreck Beach, and don't leave Big Sur River without first going for a hike along the Oak Grove Trail.
