California whitewater - Big Sur River, Santa Lucia Range, Monterey County
Monterey
county,
Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park to Motels section whitewater kayaking, rafting, and paddling information.
CLASS II+ 4 miles
This section of Big Sur River is 4 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II+ section. The put-in location is a short drive from Salinas, there's a road map further down the page with more info on that. The wonderful Monterey County scenery and the cool fresh water are in themselves reasons enough to come here to paddle. This is the only paddling stretch along Big Sur River. A bit of exercise and spending some quality time in nature have people coming from far and near. This is a pretty decent length section, you can easily run it
on an afternoon. No matter if you're whitewater rafting or kayaking in this general area you won't find many other paddling rivers. You can pitch a tent or park your RV at a nearby campground. If you've been out of state whitewater rafting and kayaking you might find the rivers
here more demanding, so don't forget that a large number of rivers in this state are not easy. Whitewater paddling here in the Santa Lucia Range is a great experience. You might have to settle for a hotel a bit away from the river if you want to stay the night, but you'd better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick.
Briefly about the general area: During the summer months highs here at Big Sur River reach the 70's with night lows in the 50's. Highs all through the wintertime are frequently in the 50's, and overnight lows through
the wintertime for Big Sur River tend to be in the 40's. Nothing beats kicking back at Pfeiffer Beach, and there is a perfect hiking trail nearby called the Oak Grove Trail. It is very dehydrated here at Big Sur River ordinarily; the wettest month of the year is commonly January,
that's the one that rains the most, and July meanwhile is the driest month. This river is so great. A fine site in close proximity to Big Sur River is Pfeiffer Gulch; Pfeiffer Falls is always fun to check out. Man, is there a heap of cool stuff to do in the Santa Lucia Range. Enjoy a lazy day on the beach at Wreck Beach, and on a great day you can take a hike along the Buzzards Roost Trail.
