Whitewater rafting and kayaking in California is often tougher than elsewhere, so don't forget that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. This stretch of Butte Creek is 6 miles long and is rated by American Whitewater as a class II+ section. The beautiful scenery of Butte County and the cool fresh water have people coming here. The put-in location is a reasonable drive from Chico, as you can see on the road map further down. Getting a good workout and spending some quality time in nature are sure to keep you coming back for more. Some
people prefer whitewater rafting and some kayaking, either way around here you'll find a large number of good spots. No shortage of good hotels, and if you make reservations in advance you're all set. This is a pretty decent length section, you can easily run it on an afternoon.
When you're paddling down a Northern Sierra Nevada river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. For all you camping people there are campgrounds nearby. Butte Creek doesn't have a lot of paddling sections, the PGandE Powerhouse to Covered Bridge section is the only one.
Briefly about the general area: Through the summer here at Butte Creek, high temperatures typically get into the 90's. When the night sets in temperatures descend down into the 60's. Highs during the wintertime are mostly in the 50's with temperatures at
Butte Creek dipping down into the 30's all through winter nights. From a precipitation point of view Butte Creek is a relatively normal location; of all the months in a year January is the one with the most rain; July is when it's the driest.
