This stretch of Chowchilla River in California is 7 miles long and it is classified as a class III-IV section by American Whitewater. The rivers for whitewater rafting and kayaking in this state are often tougher than in other states, so if you're visiting here do keep in mind that many of the sections here are not safe for beginners. The beautiful scenery of Madera County and the water flowing gracefully down Chowchilla River beats anything. There aren’t any hotels right nearby but if you're willing to drive a short distance then no problem but you'd
better reserve in advance because these hotels fill up quick. When you're paddling down a Central Sierra Nevada river like this one you always get great scenery along the way too. Whether you're whitewater rafting or kayaking around here you'll find a large number of good rivers.
The put-in location is a short drive from Madera, as you can see on the road map further down. This is a pretty decent length section, you can easily run it on an afternoon. The Road 810 to Road 800 section is the only paddling section along Chowchilla River. The campgrounds here at Chowchilla River are pretty good. A good workout and a chance to spend some time outdoors are great attractions for lots of people.

River gets a normal amount of precipitation; the month of January is the wettest with most of the rain, and July is when it's the driest. All year is a great time in the Central Sierra Nevada if you like the outdoors. Summertime at Chowchilla River comes with high temperatures
in the 80's. Summer nighttime lows dip down to the 50's. The winter brings highs down to the 40's; through the dark hours in the wintertime at Chowchilla River temperatures descend to the 20's.
